“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” ~ Rev. Dr. King
When I was a kid, I told my Dad I wanted to be just like him (my father). Ever self effacing, he told me he was a poor example and that I should rather look to MLK as a role model. As a white kid in 1970′s (there was no MLK Day back then) middle-class suburban Boston, it was a radical concept to even consider looking to a “person of color” as a role model, and it changed my thinking radically and opened my mind irreversibly. My father took a moment he could have usurped towards the honoring of his own ego and taught me some things that Reverend King had taught him: humility, equality, and respect. I am forever grateful to both of them.
